The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a dynamic scientist with a keen interest in plant genetic-resources, to head the forage genebank located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The role will also be responsible for managing the collection of tropical and sub-tropical forages held at ILRI while ensuring seamless integration, presenting a single ‘virtual genebank collection’ with distribution points in Africa and Latin America, with the collection held at the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT in Cali, Colombia. Extensive travel, both in Ethiopia to experimental stations and internationally including to Colombia to coordinate activities between the tropical-forage collections, will be required.

We invite applications for full-time study of a PhD in Entomology in the above-mentioned Department. The position is available from 1 August 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. A bursary is available for 3 years, depending on satisfactory research progress. This competitive bursary will cover all registration fees and will include a generous stipend to cover living and study expenses in Stellenbosch for the 3 year study period.
The specific project details are:
Project title: Dispersal potential and landscape connectivity of important Tephritidae species in southern Africa for the identification of management units and pest free areas.
Background and Objectives:
Species in the Tephritidae (Diptera) are important economic pests of agriculture in South Africa. The PhD project forms part of the DISPEST project: “Redefining DISpersal potential for adequate fruit fly PEST management (Diptera, Tephritidae)”. This is a collaborative project (2019-2022) between Stellenbosch University (SU), Citrus Research International (CRI) and the Royal Museum for Central Africa (Belgium), financed through the Belgian Development Cooperation. The main objectives of this PhD thesis will be to (1) generate predictions of the most likely dispersal pathways by modelling existing and newly collected trapping, fruit rearing and population genomic data for Ceratitis rosa and Ceratitis quilicii and to use this information to generate landscape connectivity maps for South Africa and Mozambique; (2) infer appropriate management units and provide information on spatial prioritization and also indicate areas suitable as Pest Free Areas (PFAs); and Areas of Low Pest Prevalence (ALPP). In addition to this main question, the PhD candidate will also be involved in (3) estimating dispersal potential and its environmental dependence in Bactrocera dorsalis, an invasive tephritid in South Africa, under both optimal and stressful conditions, through replicated laboratory trials and field release-recapture assays. Finally the PhD candidate will be involved in (4) developing morphological identification tools for the larvae of the most prominent Tephritidae in South Africa. The candidate will be based at SU, but must be willing to travel for fieldwork and research exchange and training opportunities.
• MSc in Entomology, Zoology or an equivalent biological sciences background (e.g. Genetics, Horticulture, Plant Pathology).
• Fulfill the specific admission requirements for the postgraduate degree at SU
• Prior experience in Applied Entomology and population genetics or genomics will be advantageous
• Good analytical and practical skills
• Valid driver’s license
• Excellent communication skills

The successful applicant would join a dynamic, active research group based at the Department of Conservation Ecology and Entomology, hosted by Dr Minette Karsten, Prof Pia Addison and Prof. John S. Terblanche. The research team investigates aspects of functional ecology, pest management and environmental physiology and how this may be applied to enhance sustainable agriculture and reduce the rates and impacts of biological invasions. The successful applicant will receive key training, and have substantial opportunities to develop an academic or research career, with good prospects of scientific publications, while building a network of novel collaborations with international research leaders in the subject field.
